Teenagers
and insecurities
It is
not a rare case for a teenager to have insecurities. At this age, most teens
are still confused and searching for their identity. Perfection for them is an
objective view that is determined by their family background, physical and
circle of friends. However, these teenager has to know that insecurities can be
a barrier for them to grow. Therefore, fighting against their insecurities is a
must.
From
the survey made by the youth magazine committee, the most prominent reason that
caused insecurities among teenagers in our community is caused by lack of
confidence because of social media. Social media is now a platform for
teenagers to express themselves. Most of them make their personal life public
in social media. Seeing some other teenagers living a good life – beautiful, cool
friends and luxurious lifestyle caused some teenagers to have a sort of
jealousy, or feel bad about themselves. This is when the fear of being
evaluated exist among teenagers. Living in that fear, teenagers who do not live
a ‘good life’ tend to isolate themselves and insecure. If this is the case,
these teenager has to constantly remind themselves that perfection does not
exist, they need to talk to their inner critics and remind themselves of all
the reasons that they can be interesting and fun or would be a good friend or
partner.
Next, the second most voted reason is insecurities caused by rejection
or failure. Sometimes, teenagers can’t accept being rejected because they take
it as a failure. It can be as simple as being rejected in a club to make them
feel like a loser. This resulted in some them being shy and quit trying. Even
worse, it can cause depression. To defeat the insecurity, teenagers have to
surround themselves with positivity. They need a supportive circle of friends
and advice from adults on how to adapt to this situation. This is because being
rejected in a club doesn’t necessarily means that they are useless, it’s just
the fact that their skills or contribution is not needed in that group.
As
a conclusion, insecurities can be the biggest problem to teenagers. If it is
not handled well, it might cause a worse problem in the future. Therefore as a
smart teenager, we have to see insecurity as our enemy, and a chance to improve
ourselves!
