Celebrating diversity (Nurin)

Hello peeps! Recently, I came across a blogger that claimed we should all celebrate the same festivals. I find this rare idea very intriguing. However, I might have to disagree. Festivals is one of the important parts of a community. It symbolises the identity of the community. I have seen what festivals can do to people of a country. It brings a lot of benefits to society even though we celebrate different celebrations.

First of all, diverse celebrations can bring people together. Through these celebrations, all layer of society can learn more deeply about themselves and also about other people. This will lead to a better understanding of the culture. In multicultural country like Malaysia, different celebrations of different races and religions are celebrated together throughout the year. Festivals like Eid, Deepavali and Christmas have united the citizens of the country. This has shapes Malaysian to tolerate and respect each other even though they are from different races and religion.

Moreover, celebrating different celebrations than the one that we usually celebrate can help us to gain a new perspective of the world. We can learn that the world does not revolve around us and be more open-minded. This is the time for people to step outside their bubbles and get to know people. For example, last year I had the chance to join a friend to visit a Monkey Buffet in Thailand. It was a festival to celebrate monkeys by giving them fruits and vegetables. Apparently, the siameese consider the monkeys as sacred animals. This is something new to me.

Another benefit of celebrating diverse cultural celebration is we get to make others feel accepted. I mean, we, human being, likes assurance. Celebrating their cultural festivals as a sign of appreciation and respect will make people feel more connected and loved. From doing this activity together, we realised that they are also human being like us. They are not inferior or superior than us.

As a conclusion, diverse celebrations has a lot of benefits. It can bring people together, helps us to have a new point-of-view of the world, and we can make others feel accepted. Celebrating diverse festivals can make us a better society for this generations.
