Festivals that bring people together
Hi, it’s me again. Welcome to my Blog. Yesterday, I read a blog entry posted by qilsies recently on her experience celebrating Gawai Dayak Festival. She said that it was a celebration that brought people from different tribes together and that all tribes in a country should celebrate these kinds of festivals together.
It is amazing to read her experience and somehow I could relate to how she is felt about the festival that brought people together. I very much agree with qilsies because last year, I had the chance to celebrate Pancake Festival or known either as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. It is a festival that is usually celebrated annually in France.
I can still picture how was that day today and it was one the best memories I had. On that day, people from different backgrounds, religions and ethnic groups come together to celebrate this festival. Everyone brought their own pancakes and shared their recipes with each other. There and thin, thick and even flat pancakes to be eaten. I also had the chance to taste sauces that can be eaten with pancakes instead of maple syrup. I just knew we can go creative and make our own sauce. My favourite sauce was made my by this aunty that mix honey with bananas, mangoes and pineapples. She said she got the inspiration to make this tropical sauce after she came back from her vacation in Hawaii.
Besides exchanging recipes on pancakes, we had another fun activity which was participating in telematch contest while tossing pancake on a pan. We were grouped into few groups and the first group to finish without dropping any pancake, wins the game. When it was my turn to run, i accidentally drop the pan and the pancake because i tripped on a rock and fall. I am scared to lift my head because I was not just embarrassed but also did not want to be the reason that my group lost. I was surprised to see the crowd was cheering and supporting me to finish the race. My group leader even came to me and ran next to me while I was finishing the race to give me moral support. I cannot believe what just happened the most amazing feeling I ever had. From the moral support I got the from the crowd and my team whom were total strangers to me, I am sure that with this kind of community, the world could be a better place for everyone.
I learned that food can bring people from various backgrounds to come together. It was a wonderful day as I learned new stuffs, meet new people and had one of the best days of my life. If you have experience something familiar to this, or have an opinion on festivals celebrated together, do post comments below. If you have any questions, you can also ask and maybe I would post a vlog in the future during next year’s Pancake Festival on Youtube. Do check it out!
